The phrase “This is Sparta!” is usually remembered as a booming, defiant challenge, but according to a behind-the-scenes account, the first attempts were delivered more quietly, as a low, monotone growl.
The delivery did not quite land until Gerard Butler asked for another take. On that run, he shifted into the forceful, iconic version that became inseparable from the character of King Leonidas.
